Eddie describes his life before homelessness as, “happy with no dramas.” But then family relationships broke down and the world he knew crumbled when he lost his home and the sense of security, safety, and familiarity that he used to know.

Coming to Hutt St Centre for the first time was daunting, and Eddie was unsure of what he was walking into.

Eddie found life-changing support through our Aged City Living Team, who helped him find a safe place to call home. With the stability and security of home, he rediscovered his creativity and developed a passion for art. Today, Eddie is proud to be the featured boots artist for Walk a Mile in My Boots 2026.

“I watched videos on learning to pour paint, and then I put my own take on it by adding planets and stars.”

“I felt privileged being asked to paint the boots, I really did. It’s very humbling that people really like my art, and I feel good inside about it. It gives me a boost.”

“I poured the paints on the boots, and then blew it across with my hairdryer. I sprayed on the planets using an airbrush and painted the stars by hand. I enjoyed the challenge; it kept me busy.”

Eddie is feeling settled after living in his new house for a year now while building strong social connections.

“Art has brought me so close to so many nice people. Everyone likes to be liked y’know what I mean?”
