For people experiencing homelessness, fuel is not a discretionary expense; it is often essential to survival. For those sleeping in their cars, it can mean the ability to stay warm on a cold night.  

As prices rise, that simple act becomes harder to afford, forcing people to choose between warmth, food, or saving what little they have for the days ahead.  

The impact doesn’t stop there. Higher fuel costs make it more difficult to travel to support services, medical appointments, or even a safe place to rest. At the same time, the rising cost of fuel flows through to everything – food, transport, and basic supplies –stretching already limited budgets even further. 

These pressures are also felt by services like Hutt St Centre. As fuel prices increase, so too does the cost of reaching people, delivering essential supplies, and keeping vital programs running. And as more people experience financial strain, demand for support continues to grow. 

This is the reality behind rising fuel prices, a ripple effect that hits hardest for those with the least.
